Auctioneer’s Note: What a collection! Wess may have one of the largest Early Farm Collections we’ve sold. Everything is stored inside and in its original condition. Wess started collecting as a young man. There is no telling how many miles he has traveled or sales he has attended to put this collection together. This will be 2 long days of selling. So plan on spending all day. Plenty of parking and your welcome to ring your RVs in on Thursday. Mark your calendars, bring your cameras and step back in time. As we sell Wess’s life time collection. See you at the sale David, Dusty and Bill.

For more information regarding this auction contact David Thornhill – 314-393-7241 or Dusty Thornhill – 314-393-4726.
CLICK HERE FOR VISUAL TOUR OF THIS 2 DAY AUCTION

The heat was definitely on with our auctions this past weekend! Not only was the temperature hot both Saturday and Sunday but so were the prices!

The gun sale on Saturday at Ultimate Defense in St. Peters was a huge success! The large crowd withstood the heat and humidity for the opportunity to purchase some great guns – and it definitely paid off in the end – for both the buyers and the sellers. The prices were just a little over 20% OVER what the estimate for the day was – way to go guys!

If you missed the sale Saturday, you missed some nice guns. We sold pistols and revolvers, rifles (both semi-automatic and bolt-action), shotguns, and even swords. We sold many makes of guns including Beretta, Colt, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Springfield, Browning, Walther, Marlin and Sig Sauer just to name a few. We even sold a couple of pink bolt-action Cricketts by Keystone – perfect for the young female hunter in your family. There were even some Ducks Unlimited Special Edition guns and a Limited Edition 12-gauge shotgun by Browning.

But the gun sale was just the beginning of our weekend. We were in Williamsburg, MO on Sunday for a real estate and personal property auction. The sellers had used this little place as a weekend retreat and I can see why! The property sold in four tracts – with a 1-½ story cabin, a barn/wood sided shed & lean-to along with a stocked pond on one tract. What a great place to get away from it all! The property prices exceeded the sellers expectations so even though the grandkids will miss their weekend home, the sale price helped to ease the pain of selling.

Much of the personal property that we sold Sunday were things that the sellers used on the property – a Case 580 C Diesel Extend A Hoe, 4-wheelers, log-splitters, tractors and equipment, along with some antiques and collectibles. Again, it was a warm day but there was lots of shade and a little breeze – what a great place for an auction.

The temperatures could certainly cool down a little but let’s keep the prices hot! We’ll be taking a few days off but we hope to see you at our next auction, Sunday, May 20. We have some great auctions coming up and will be busy the next couple of months – including three days of sales over Memorial Day Weekend. And if you missed the opportunity to purchase the weekend retreat in Williamsburg, Dave just booked another option for you on Sunday, June 24. Check the Upcoming Auctions tab of our web site, www.thornhillauction.com for further information on all of our sales!
We hope to see you soon!

Thornhill Auction Co. First Auction Blog!

Welcome to our first Thornhill Auction Co. blog! Some of you may be thinking – what would an auction company have to blog about? In the beginning, we thought that also, but as time passed, we realized we actually have lots to blog about. So come with us on our journey as we highlight past and upcoming auctions, items that we have sold, and a little bit of history on some of our sellers.

Thornhill Auction Co. is a family-owned and operated business that has been in business now for 49 years! David and Dusty are 2nd and 3rd generation auctioneers specializing in selling real estate at auction. Our office is located in Lincoln County just east of Highway 61 between Troy and Moscow Mills, Missouri.

The first four months of 2012 have been extremely busy in our part of the auction world. Dusty keeps saying that the rest of 2012 will be just as busy so we have much more to look forward to. We’ve already held 19 auctions – with three of them being 2-day auctions – while Dave & Dusty have conducted five benefit auctions. A couple of the auctions even had to be moved at the last minute because of inclement weather but along with the rains came the crowds. We’ve had great turnouts this year and hope to see more of you in the future.

Even though we specialize in selling real estate at auction, our auctions have included many items – including coins, advertising signs, firearms, antique toys, cars, trucks, tractors and farm equipment, artwork, antiques, household and collectibles. And we have much more to come – including a framed John F. Kennedy Inaugural Address from January 20, 1961, Indian artifacts, antique stationary gas engines, a log smoke house, and a collection of 80+ push lawnmowers.

We had a coin auction in February with the largest collection of gold coins that we’ve ever sold. With gold and silver prices as high as they have been, we had a great day. $20 gold coins – dated 1879 to 1928 – were selling anywhere between $1700 and $2000, while a 1894 Key choice AU Morgan Silver Dollar sold for $1150. What a day!

Our sellers come from all over with varied backgrounds – we may work for a family settling an estate or a collector who is downsizing or moving. Just this year alone, our sellers have included previous business owners, farmers still living on the family homestead, a local physician, and several military veterans – a Navy Corpsman who served in the Korean War, a jeweler by trade who was a WWII Marine veteran having played trumpet in the US Marine Band, and a Union Electric employee who also served in the Marine Corps.

Our buyers also come from all over with interesting backgrounds – it is not uncommon to have several out-of-state buyers, along with our regulars, when we have special or one-of-a-kind items. A Nutrena Feed Sign – sold in late February – brought $300 and was being taken back to a Nutrena Feed plant in Minnesota for display. We recently sold a 2008 Lexus RX350 SUV for over the blue book value along with some Thomas Mangelsen artwork for up to $900. That’s the fun of an auction – you never know where the price will stop!

We hope to see you soon at one of our upcoming sales – check them out on our website under the “Upcoming Auctions” tab to your left. Our goal is to keep you updated on things happening within the world of auction – with an emphasis on the past week’s sales and specialty items. Keep checking back and see where we go with this!

Lori Biehl
Clerk and Cashier
